Covering 185 square kilometers, the Village de Memramcook has 143 line kilometers worth of streets. Throughout its territory, the municipality is responsible for maintaining roads and streets. This is done through the awarding of contracts. The provincial Department of Transportation currently holds the street maintenance contract for the summer and winter months. Maintenance work includes patching roads in the springtime and snow and ice removal from November to April. In 2007, the maintenance contract alone was worth $575,000 dollars, more than half the nearly one million dollar Transportation budget. Other smaller contracts given to the private sector include winter maintenance of certain roads not serviced by the Department of Transportation. 

Other items included in these services are street lighting, drainage ditch cleaning, street cleaning, road marking, signage and other related services such as brush cutting and summer cleaning. 

The operating budget for this department accounts for 30% of the municipality’s total annual operating budget. 

Regarding major road work, in 2006, the municipal council initiated an ambitious road redesign project for its thoroughfares. In 2007, major repair work worth 1.1 million dollars was begun. The redesign will continue for the next five years. It will greatly improve Memramcook’s streets, roads and highways. 

Major repair needs in the municipality currently sit at more than 7 million dollars. This is directly due to the amalgamation of seven Local Service Districts with the Village de Saint-Joseph in 1995. This amalgamation resulted in the creation of the current Village de Memramcook. 

These repairs are above and beyond the scope already addressed by the provincial Department of Transportation regarding provincial and regional designated roadways.
