Colonel Scott and 300 soldiers pursue Memramcouke residents during the Deportation.
Three villages made up of cabins are built in the region to hide Acadians.

First post-deportation Acadian village built at La Montain (Village des LePlatte)

Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres buys the tract, known as La Pointe, situated between the Memramcook and Petitcodiac rivers.
Acadians settle in the region which later becomes known as Gautreau Village.

First Acadian parish and first religious parish settled in Memramcouke, New Brunswick.

Arrival of Memramcouke’s first priest, the abbé Thomas Leroux
The first church to be settled on the western bank of the Memramcouke is built at La Montain.

First leases signed with DesBarres by Acadians in La Pointe through the agent Mary Cannon

Acadians living on the East side of the Memramcook River receive grants from the government.

1786

First land claim request submitted by Acadians from La Pointe to the Government regarding land titles.

1790

Founding of the Village du Bonhomme Gould

Second request submitted by Acadians from La Pointe regarding their lands

Death of the abbé Thomas Leroux, who is replaced a short time later by the abbé Thomas Power

1795

New petitions submitted by Acadians to the Government to get hold of their lands

Fire at the Église de La Montain

First church to be built on the current site in Saint-Joseph by the abbé Thomas Power

1802

Denaut and Plessis, bishops from Québec, plan to establish a religious community and a college in Memramcouke. This task was to be given to the Pères de la Foi who were supposed to reactivate the ordre des Jésuites. However both the governor-general and the provincial lieutenant-governors strongly oppose the plan.

1803

Mgr Denaut, the bishop in Québec, visits various Acadian communities, among them Memramcouke, and orders baptismal, marriage and other records to be kept.

Departure of the abbé Thomas Power and arrival of the abbé François Ciquard

Confirmation of DesBarres’ title by the Government of New Brunswick

Another petition submitted by the Acadians of la Pointe to the Government

Visit of Mgr Plessis who orders the building of a new church “within three years”

Start of construction on the second church in Saint-Joseph under the direction of the abbé Louis Brodeur

Acadians (6) from Beaumont buy their lands from DesBarres.

Acadians from l’Anse-des-Cormier (7) buy their lands from DesBarres.

Arrival of the abbé Célestin Gauvreau; death of Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres at the age of 102 years

Departure of the abbé Louis Gingras

1827

Initiated by associates of DesBarres, arrests of 20 or so Acadians for contempt; the abbé Célestin Gauvreau intervenes on the behalf of the targeted Acadians who barely avoid being imprisoned.

Arrival of the abbé Ferdinand Gauvreau, cousin of Célestin who leaves in 1829

1829

Again initiated by associates of DesBarres, arrests for contempt of 20 or so Acadians who are then imprisoned for 2 months.

1832

1840

Construction of the first large Acadian stone church (current church) by the abbé Ferdinand Gauvreau

Construction of Sainte-Anne’s Chapel in Beaumont

Resolution of the deadlock between the DesBarres and the Acadians ratified in 1842: Acadians from La pointe can now own their lands by buying them from DesBarres at a price of one dollar per acre.

1847

The stone walls of the church are completed, but the interior still needs to be finished.

1852

Arrival of the abbé François-Xavier Lafrance; there are 440 families in Memramcook.

1854

Foundation of the Séminaire (Collège) Saint-Thomas by Lafrance

1855

The interior of the stone church is completed.

1856

(August 15) Official consecration of the Saint-Thomas de Memramcouke Church

1862

Closure of the Collège Saint-Thomas for financial reasons

1864

Departure of the abbé Lafrance for Barachois; arrival of father Camille Lefebvre and the holy cross congregation; foundation of the Collège Saint-Joseph in the former Collège Saint-Thomas building.

Abbé Lafrance’s funeral; burial under the Saint-Thomas Church’s sanctuary

Construction of the Collège Saint-Joseph’s first chapel (annex)

Construction of the Académie Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur by the Parish of Saint-Thomas

The Académie Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur becomes a residential school (convent) under the direction of the Sisters of Charity.
